This is a TEV-1 8.5m vertical radiator mounted onto about 1.8m of thick aluminium scaffold pipe (hammered into the ground with about 2 foot sticking out).
Ive then got my LDG Z11-Pro tuner in the weatherproofed box at the base sprayed in cold-gal to match the rest. It is siliconed shut and taped.
Then there are around 8 radials buried across my lawn and 20m of RG213 running into the shack (with N connectors for weather sealing)
So far i’ve worked alot of europe and the united states (check my online log to see, everything 2012 is this antenna)

Recently discovered a very cool thing called WEB-SDR
Many possibilities, including monitoring your own transmissions for antenna testing purposes.

The straps were all then painted in black enamel to protect it from the elements.
Once these straps were installed (along with another one under the car and 2 under the bonnet hinges) I was able to do a quick continuity test from the antenna base – anything I touched gave me a pleasant ’beep’ indicating a connection.
I tested antenna to exhaust – beep.. braid of coax from radio to spare wheel – beep.. tailgate to exhaust.. beep!
I attempted a quick qso with the Ballarat net on 40m and got a solid 59 report.. wicked! I think its fair to say, everything appears to be working at this stage.. SWR is 1:1 when the antenna is raised or lowed to resonance. Gold.
Finally, the Tarheel M75 is now mounted on my 4×4. With a fair bit of help we got the mount all welded up and attached.
Then late Sunday afternoon in between rain showers I managed to install the antenna itself.
Initial testing with VK5LA proved very promising with 58 to 59 reports on both 80m and 40m whilst driving.
I then made a contact in VK4, and then some DX in Sweden!
I was a little concerned with how difficult it might be to band change, but it was suprisingly simple and easy. Simply raise/lower the antenna until the noise peaks, and then you’re 95% right first go. 1 or two presses up/down and you’ve got Flat SWR.
Would i recommend this antenna? two thumbs up! a must have if you’re considering a serious mobile station.
I found it was much cheaper to buy directly from Tarheel rather than their Australian ‘authorised stockists’ due to the high aussie dollar.
Stay tuned for more pics and vids on this beast!
